Coastal Pelagic Species Advisory Subpanel to hold online meeting August 30, 2023

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) will convene a webinar meeting of its Coastal Pelagic Species Advisory Subpanel (CPSAS) to discuss items on the Pacific Council’s September 2023 meeting agenda.  The online meeting is open to the public and will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time or until business for the day has been completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. In the event an outage occurs or technical issues arise that impact the experience of remote attendees, we will attempt to resolve them but ultimately we cannot guarantee that they will be resolved satisfactorily.

Purpose of the meeting

The primary purpose of the CPSAS webinar meeting is to prepare for the Pacific Council’s September 2023 meeting agenda items, including a briefing by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the National Center for Coastal Ocean Science on the draft Oregon Wind Energy Areas.  No management actions will be decided by the CPSAS.  The advisory body recommendations will be considered by the Pacific Council at their September Council meeting.

This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. Purpose of the meeting

The primary purpose of the GAP meeting is to prepare for the Pacific Council’s September 2023 meeting.  The GAP will discuss items related to the advisory body’s particular management items as well as Pacific halibut and administrative matters on the Pacific Council’s agenda.  There will also be a joint session with the MPC on marine planning. The focus of the joint session is to discuss the newly-released Oregon Wind Energy Areas. The GAP may also address other assignments as directed by the Pacific Council. No management actions will be decided by the GAP and MPC.  The GAP and MPC recommendations will be considered by the Pacific Council at their September Council meeting.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (Pacific Council) Groundfish Subcommittee of the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) will hold two online meetings to review 2023 groundfish stock assessments. This is the second meeting and will be held Monday, August 28 and Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) or when business for the day has been completed. This meeting is being conducted remotely with a web broadcast that provides the opportunity for remote public comment. In the event an outage occurs or technical issues arise that impact the experience of remote attendees, we will attempt to resolve them but ultimately we cannot guarantee that they will be resolved satisfactorily.

Purpose of the meeting

During this meeting, the SSC’s Groundfish Subcommittee will review the following: assessments and stock assessment review reports for canary rockfish and petrale sole, a catch-only projection for widow rockfish, and a limited assessment update for sablefish.  Further, the SSC Groundfish Subcommittee will review a catch report for yelloweye rockfish to determine the adequacy of rebuilding progress. The SSC Groundfish Subcommittee will prepare their recommendations for the SSC and Pacific Council consideration at their meetings in September.  Assessment recommendations may include endorsing these new stock assessments for management use or requesting further analyses to be reviewed at the late September review panel.

The purpose of this online HMSMT meeting is to plan for a joint meeting with the Pacific Council’s HMS Advisory Subpanel concurrent with the September 2023 Pacific Council meeting. The Pacific Council directed its two HMS advisory bodies to meet jointly to develop a detailed proposal for a workshop involving stakeholders. The objective of such a workshop would be to consider the development of fisheries for swordfish and other economically important species caught in the California large-mesh gillnet (DGN) fishery. This discussion is in the context of the transition of the DGN fishery as mandated by the Drift Gillnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act.
