Resources: Applicable Laws

The Pacific Fishery Management Council must abide by several Federal laws.  The 2007 Reauthorized Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) applies directly to the Council because it establishes the existence, structure, and operational principles.  Other Federal laws (such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act) apply directly to Federal government agencies such as the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).  Although not a Federal agency, the Council is Congressionally authorized to make management recommendations to NMFS regarding the nation’s marine resources, including commercial and recreational fishing activities.  Therefore, the Council works in close concert with NMFS to ensure compliance with all such laws.  Information on the most pertinent applicable laws is available through the links to the left, or listed below:
