Fishery Management Plan and Amendments: Amendment 8

Amendment 8 (to the Northern Anchovy Fishery Management Plan) Incorporating a Name Change to the Coastal Pelagic Species Fishery Management Plan

December 1998

Amendment 8 added Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax), Pacific (chub) mackerel (Scomber japonicas), Jack mackerel (Trachurus symmetricus), and market squid (Loligo opalescens) to the fishery management unit, which covered northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), and changed the name of the FMP to “the Coastal Pelagic Species Fishery Management Plan”. The amendment also included a limited entry program for coastal pelagic finfish species south of 39° N latitude. The amendment contains harvest polices that preserve a portion of the stocks as forage for marine mammals and birds while maintaining a stable fishery, and an essential fish habitat section, both of which conform to the requirements of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1996. The document also contains a description of stocks, fisheries, and cost estimates.
