IS THE COUNCIL IMPACTED BY THE SHUTDOWN?  The Council staff is at work and conducting business as usual. However, most of our Federal partners at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS, West Coast Region and the Northwest and Southwest Fisheries Science Centers), the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are on furlough during the shutdown.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS?  Since many NMFS scientists and fishery management specialists are key contributors to the Council’s analyses, Management Teams and Committees, the Council is rescheduling or modifying the agendas for several meetings where NMFS representatives were expected to provide pivotal presentations, reports, and/or analyses.  We will be evaluating each meeting on a case by case basis, but at this time we expect the January 14-18 Groundfish Management Team, the January 15-16 Ecosystem Workgroup, and the January 22-25 Salmon Technical Team meetings to occur as scheduled, with or without a resolution to the shutdown.  We have, however, canceled the January 16-18 HMSMT meeting and the January 22-24 Scientific and Statistical Committee Methodology Review meeting.

WHAT ABOUT THE COUNCIL’S MARCH AND APRIL 2019 MEETINGS?  The Council’s March meeting in Vancouver, Washington at the Hilton Hotel and April meeting in Rohnert Park, California at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma will occur as scheduled, including all advisory body meetings. If the partial government shutdown remains in place, the Council will conduct as much business as possible given the Federal furlough.  We will provide updates if there is a need to modify either the March or April agendas by the first of week of February, should the shutdown last that long, or earlier as appropriate.
