Pacific Fishery Management Council now accepting public comment on draft Salmon Rebuilding Plans for two Chinook stocks

NOTE:  Comments received by the February 7, 2019 5:00 PM deadline will be included in the March 2019 briefing book under Agenda Item D.2 (March 2019 briefing book scheduled to be posted the afternoon of 02/15/2019 )

At the November 2018 Council meeting in San Diego, California, the Council reviewed draft versions of five salmon rebuilding plans currently in development.  The Council approved the draft salmon rebuilding plans for Sacramento River fall Chinook and Klamath River fall Chinook for public review, along with some suggested revisions.

Updated drafts of these two Chinook rebuilding plans are now available for public comment. Public comment should be concentrated on the sections of the document that focus on the salmon rebuilding plan, which are mainly sections 1-5, and any appendices noted in those sections.  Sections that indicate ‘data pending’ will be developed at a later date by NMFS, and made available for public comment through the notice-and comment rulemaking process.

Additional information

Three natural coho stocks (Queets coho, Strait of Juan de Fuca coho, and Snohomish coho) and two Chinook stocks (Sacramento River fall Chinook and Klamath River fall Chinook) were found to meet the criteria for being classified as overfished in June 2018.  Under the tenets of the Salmon Fishery Management Plan, the Salmon Technical Team is required to develop a salmon rebuilding plan for each of these stocks, and propose them to the Council within one year.

At the November 2018 Council meeting in San Diego, California, the Council reviewed draft versions of five salmon rebuilding plans currently in development.  The Council approved the draft salmon rebuilding plans for Sacramento River fall Chinook and Klamath River fall Chinook for public review.  The draft salmon rebuilding plans for the three coho stocks, provided in November 2018, will continue to be developed in cooperation with the co-managers, with an expectation that draft plans will be revised in time for publication in the advanced briefing book for the 2019 March Council meeting.

At the March 2019 Council meeting, the Council will review the draft versions of all five salmon plans.  The Council may consider approving the three draft coho salmon rebuilding plans for public review, and may also consider adopting the two draft Chinook rebuilding plans as final.
