Bilateral Pacific Whiting Scientific Review Group to Meet

Review of 2011 Ocean Salmon Fisheries Available

The Council’s annual review of ocean salmon fisheries is available online. The review document provides a summary of important biological and socioeconomic data from which to assess the impacts of past management actions, determine how well management objectives are being met, and improve regulations for the future. The Council will formally review this report at its March meeting prior to the development of management options for the approaching fishing season.

March 2012 Briefing Book Deadline

Public Comment Deadline – Advance Briefing Book

Comments or materials received by 11:59 pm, February 9, 2012, will be mailed to Council members and appropriate advisory bodies prior to the meeting. This is known as the “Advance Briefing Book Deadline.”

Supplemental Public Comment Deadline

Comments or materials received at the Council office after February 9 but by 11:59 pm, February 26 will be included in the supplemental materials distributed to the Council on the first day of the meeting. This is known as the “Supplemental Public Comment Deadline.”

How to Submit Comments

Written comments and materials on matters before the Council are accepted by the Council at any time. However, the public is encouraged to submit comments and materials as far in advance of the meeting as possible to maximize their exposure to the Council process. Comments in electronic format are most welcome, as they expedite posting to the Council’s website. Please email your comments to: pfmc.comments@noaa.gov. Of course, we accept comments by “snail mail” and fax; please see our “Contact Us” page.

Groundfish Essential Fish Habitat Review Committee to Hold Conference Call

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) will convene a conference call of its Groundfish Essential Fish Habitat Review Committee (EFHRC). The primary purposes of the conference call are to discuss a draft request for proposals, and to continue planning for a report to the Pacific Council at its April 2012 meeting in Seattle, Washington. Other topics may be discussed as time allows, at the discretion of the Chair.

The conference call will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time. A listening station will be made available to the public, in the Small Conference Room of the Council office:

Coastal Pelagic Species Advisory Subpanel and Coastal Pelagic Species Management Team to Hold Conference Call

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) will convene a conference call of its Coastal Pelagic Species Advisory Subpanel (CPSAS) and Coastal Pelagic Species Management Team (CPSMT). The primary purposes of the meeting are to discuss an exempted fishing permit proposal for Pacific sardine, and to discuss minor revisions to the terms of reference documents guiding stock assessment reviews and methodology reviews. The CPSAS and CPSMT may develop reports for the Pacific Council’s March 2012 meeting in Sacramento, California. Other topics may be discussed as time allows, at the discretion of the CPSAS and CPSMT Chairs. These topics may include future meeting planning and an update on Pacific mackerel harvest.

The conference call will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Public review draft of the Southern Oregon/Northern California coast coho salmon recovery plan available

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announces the availability for public review the Draft Recovery Plan (Draft Plan) for the Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast (SONCC) Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) evolutionarily significant unit. NMFS is soliciting review and comment from the public and all interested parties on the Draft Plan, and will consider all substantive comments received during the review period before submitting the Draft Plan for final approval. Comments are due no later than March 5, 2012.

Ecosystem Plan Development Team to Hold a Work Session via Conference Call

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Council) will convene a meeting via conference call of the Ecosystem Plan Development Team (EPDT) that is open to the public. Please note, this is not a public hearing; it is a work session for the primary purpose of drafting a report and recommendations to the Council on the Development of a Fishery Ecosystem Plan (FEP).

The EPDT will meet on Thursday, January 19, 2012 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., or when business for the day is completed. A listening station will be made available to the public, at the Council office:

The EPDT will primarily address Council requests from the November 2011 Council meeting. The primary purpose of the meeting is to revise and expand sections of the Council’s developing Fishery Ecosystem Plan, discuss the content and format of an annual ecosystem report, explore mechanisms for incorporating ecosystem science into stock assessments, and revisit the need and mechanisms for expanding protective measures for unexploited forage species. The EPDT may also develop recommendations for the March 2012 Council meeting.
