Habitat and Communities
While the Council’s primary focus is fishery management, the Council has responsibilities for protecting fish habitat and the human communities that depend on healthy fisheries. The Magnuson-Stevens Act requires the Council to identify and describe essential fish habitat and “habitat areas of particular concern” for its managed fisheries. The Magnuson-Stevens Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and other laws also require that the Council into account the importance of fishery resources to fishing communities, and describe the impacts of management decisions on fishing communities.
