Council to Adopt Range of Options for 2007 Ocean Salmon Fisheries and Management Measures for 2007 Pacific Whiting Fishery

Council Meeting Dates: March 5-9, 2007

The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Council) and its advisory entities will meet March 5-9, 2007, in Sacramento, California to address issues related to salmon, Pacific halibut, coastal pelagic species, groundfish, and essential fish habitat.

Agenda

Key agenda items include Council action to:

  • Adopt a set of options for the 2007 ocean salmon fisheries for public review.
  • Adopt harvest specifications and management measures for the 2007 Pacific whiting fishery.
  • Adopt proposed 2007 incidental catch regulations for Pacific halibut.
  • Consider inseason adjustments in the 2007 groundfish fishery.
  • Consider requesting an emergency rule to limit vessel participation in the 2007 whiting fishery.
  • Review and planning for implementation of requirements resulting from reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act.
  • Further refine alternatives for the trawl rationalization program.

All meetings are open to the public, except a closed session to be held from 1 pm to 2 pm on Monday, March 5, to discuss litigation and personnel matters. For more information on the meetings, refer to the agenda or call the Council office at 503-820-2280 or 866-806-7204.

Public Comment Guidelines

The public is encouraged to comment, either verbally at the meeting or in writing. Timing of agenda items may change as the meeting progresses, and items not completed on the scheduled day will be carried over to later in the meeting, usually the next day.

Oral Public Comments

  • Oral public comments will be accepted prior to action on each agenda item.
  • Public comments on fishery issues NOT on the agenda will be accepted at the end of the day on Monday, March 5, 2007.

Written Public Comments

  • Written public comments are accepted by the Council at any time. However, the public is encouraged to submit written comments as far in advance of the meeting as possible.
  • Comments received by close of business February 14, 2007 will be included in the briefing books mailed to Council members prior to the meeting.
  • Comments received after February 14, 2007 but by close of business February 27, 2007 will be distributed to Council members at the onset of the meeting.
  • If you cannot meet this latter deadline, but would like your written comments distributed to Council members when you testify at the meeting, please bring 40 copies to the meeting with the Agenda Item Topic Number in the upper right corner of the front page of each copy. Refer to the agenda for the topic numbers; for example, Agenda Item C.1.e refers to public comment on the first item under Salmon Management on the March agenda.
