Council to Develop Groundfish Management
Options for the 2003 Fishery
The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Council) will meet September 10-13, 2002 and its advisory entities will meet September 7-13, 2002, in Portland, Oregon to address issues related to groundfish, marine reserves, Pacific halibut, coastal pelagic species, salmon, and habitat.
Key agenda items include Council action to:

Establish preliminary catch levels and other management specifications for the 2003 groundfish fishery.

Consider inseason adjustments to some groundfish fisheries.

Consider alternatives to the schedule for the groundfish management process.

Consider initiating the groundfish fishery management plan amendment process to delegate nearshore management authority.

Develop recommendations regarding marine reserve proposals for California.

Identify proposed changes for Pacific halibut management in 2003.

Consider inseason management measures for the Pacific sardine fishery.

Consider priorities for review of salmon methodology.

All meetings are open to the public, except a closed session to be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, to discuss litigation and personnel matters. A block of sleeping rooms are being held under "Pacific Fishery Management Council." If you would like to receive the Council room rate, identify yourself to the hotel as a participant in the Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting and make your reservation immediately.

PUBLIC COMMENT GUIDELINES
The public is encouraged to comment, either verbally at the meeting, or in writing. Oral public comments on action items on the agenda will be accepted prior to action on each item. The timing of agenda items may change as the meeting progresses. Items not completed on the scheduled day will be carried over to the next day. Public comments on fishery issues not on the agenda will be accepted on Tuesday, September 10, at 4 p.m.
Written public comments are accepted by the Council at any time. However, the public is encouraged to submit written comments as far in advance of the meeting as possible. Comments received by close of business August 23, 2002 will be included in the briefing books mailed to Council members prior to the meeting. Comments received by September 3, 2002 will be distributed to Council members at the onset of the meeting.
If you cannot meet this latter deadline, but would like your written comments distributed to Council members at this meeting, please bring at least 40 copies with the Agenda Item Number written in the upper right corner of the front page of each copy.
